Of all the things to think about, your ceiling fans are probably not something you think about when trying to winterize your Home, Condo, or Apartment.  However, operating your ceiling fans in the winter is probably one of the more important things someone can do to help keep stay comfortable when the weather starts to turn cold.

Every ceiling fan has a switch which enable it to run forward, with the blades spinning so the air is blown down, or reverse so the air is drawn upward and mixed.  The summer setting that is recommended is the "forward" setting so the air blown down will give a cooling effect.  The "reverse" setting is recommended for the winter months so that cool air is drawn upward and mixed with the warm air on the ceiling.  This will also help avoid the feeling of a draft from the air being blown downwards.

Be sure to stop the fan so the blades stop moving before changing the switch from forward to reverse.  Generally, the middle speed setting is adequate to mix the air.  As a final thought, those with high vaulted ceilings, the downward setting is generally appropriate for both winter and summer months.
